Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, offered a series of angry, insult-laden denials to Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday in response to questions about his conduct, including whether he drank to excess, forced subordinates to take polygraph exams and made false statements to Congress.
The remarks, delivered at a hearing ostensibly about the coming budget for the F.B.I. and other law enforcement agencies, veered from sedate exchanges about operational matters to ugly personal confrontations, particularly between Mr. Patel and Senator Chris Van Hollen, Democrat of Maryland.
“You are a disgrace, Mr. Director,” the senator declared toward the end of the hearing.
Mr. Van Hollen had pressed Mr. Patel about an article in The Atlantic that asserted that the F.B.I. director drank so much that it raised concerns about his ability to do his job or be reached quickly in a crisis. Mr. Patel has vehemently denied those claims, filing a defamation suit over the article.
“I will not be tarnished by baseless allegations,” Mr. Patel said angrily. The director went on to accuse Mr. Van Hollen of inappropriate drinking, pointing to a visit the senator made to El Salvador last April to meet Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, an immigrant the Trump administration mistakenly sent from Maryland to a high-security foreign prison.

Britain’s King Charles III set out the agenda of a fragile U.K. government on Wednesday after Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced down calls for his resignation that sparked heavy selling pressure on gilts in the previous session.
The State Opening of Parliament and King’s Speech, a grand affair in which the monarch presents the government’s legislative agenda for the next parliamentary period, took place after Starmer’s political leadership remained under threat following the political fallout of the ruling Labour Party’s poor performance in local elections last week.
Starmer appears to have seen off any immediate leadership challenge for now, and will hope that today’s pomp, pageantry and policy agenda can shift attention away from the current crisis.
That doesn’t mean the leadership threat has gone away. Ahead of King’s address in the House of Lords Wednesday morning, Starmer had a brief meeting, reportedly lasting only 17 minutes, with one of his main leadership rivals, Wes Streeting.
Streeting — the U.K’s health secretary — had reportedly asked to meet privately with Starmer on Tuesday but had been refused. That came after a crunch cabinet meeting in which Starmer vowed to keep leading the Labour Party, despite over 80 lawmakers (at that point) calling on the PM to resign.

Hantavirus outbreak grows to 11 cases, 9 confirmed

A Spanish passenger on the MV Hondius cruise ship who was in quarantine at a military hospital in Madrid is now confirmed to have hantavirus, raising the outbreak total to 11 cases, nine of which have been lab-confirmed. The death toll remains at three.
Speaking in Madrid today, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, said, “There is no sign that we are seeing the start of a larger outbreak. But of course the situation could change, and given the long incubation period of the virus, it’s possible we might see more cases in the coming weeks.”
So far no cases have been identified in anyone other than a passenger on the Dutch cruise ship.
Hantavirus symptoms can appear up to 42 days after exposure. Tedros cautioned he would expect more cases in the coming days because of the long incubation period.
Dutch hospital personnel in quarantine
In other updates, a French woman who was on the ship and fell ill while flying to Paris is in stable condition in an intensive care unit. And 12 Dutch hospital staff are in quarantine after incorrectly handling the bodily fluids of a hantavirus patient.
Argentinian officials announced today that, to track the virus, they will be sending a team to a landfill and other locations a Dutch couple visited. Patient zero has been identified as a Dutch man who was an avid birdwatcher. He visited the landfill before boarding the ship. He died from hantavirus infection, as did his wife.
